Re: Help needed. No start. No spark

Okay - bear with me while I back-track here because, as you say, this is getting confusing... 11.48 won't start the car, and an instant drop like that doesn't sound healthy. Do you have any idea from either looking at it or from any documentation you may have got with the car how old the battery is?...

Re: My 'new' 480 has no dash warning lights...

Hi Ken Welcome back! Several of us have been there done that with the "I've finished with 480s - oh no, actually I haven't..." but yours sounds like and impressively quick reversion! As Jeff says it sounds as if you've lost a feed to the instrument panel. Do the actual instruments (rev counter/speed...

Re: New member, looking for a 480

Thank you everyone! I feel very welcomed already! I think finding a suitable car could be quite a challenge. I notice from howmanyleft that there are under a 1000 still in existence in the UK. Normally the advice for cult cars seems to run: "Don't buy the first one you see" or "look at a few before...

Re: Air-intake hose (Volvo Part #3448082)

Hi Connor I can't see your picture but I can tell you there are several different ones across the 400 range, depending on age and which engine. Sorry - I checked my stores today and although I was sure I had a spare, I can't find it so I probably passed it on to someone at some stage. I'd persevere ...

Re: Help needed. No start. No spark

Sounds like life somewhere! I too am intrigued by the 3 relays - I have a GT and there are only 2. Don't worry about not finding the fuel pump fuse - despite what the book says it isn't in fact up there at all!! Quick silly question - you haven't got a remote to lock/unlock with have you? Only ever ...

Re: New member, looking for a 480

Welcome Howard I'll echo what the others have all said - if you're going to take this particular plunge, then brace yourself for frustration at times, but also be ready to be pleasantly surprised by a greatly under-estimated car, whose reputation was unfairly tarnished by problems in early models. V...

Re: Early car in a bush

R3 not collected yet, R2 is still in the way at the 480 Sanctuary! No V5 yet - the plan is to drive it up to Yorkshire when it goes to dc's 480 Pamper Parlour so we'll need to have it road-legal. Fingers crossed we don't have to resort to another trailer hire. Love the idea that I am running a "480...

Re: Help needed. No start. No spark

Sorry for being slow to join in here - been away for a few days and, anyway, Jeff has been saying everything I might say (and even quoting me ;) ). Knowing the 480 this could be any number of things, so I would definitely say tackle the code-reader before you carry on; it might help avoid a lot of c...

Re: Just how safe should I feel?

Ben, reading through this thread I think it's important to remember we are mixing two subtly different conversations here. The first is, if the worse happens how well will my 480 look after me? The second is what can I do to avoid getting into hot water in the first place? You've had a lot of respon...

Re: Just how safe should I feel?

A few years ago my daughter lost control in torrential rain (saquaplaned at a bend ) crossed the road hit a wall bounced back across road and thumped into the crash barrier and stopped . Car was just about driveable and limped home daughter was fine. These cars are safe . Jim - fantastic to hear fr...

Re: Just how safe should I feel?

Between James and Jay they've pretty much answered your question Ben, I think anyway. There have been quite a few classic car articles on the 480 recently which all tend to observe that they are very safe "for an old car". And that's the point. When new they had everything Volvo knew about safety pu...

Re: Passenger side door pocket, rear speaker housings, load cover and ‘Venetian blind’

Must admit I still play around with cassettes and like having the drawer unit thingy - if anyone has one rattling around they no longer want, btw, I'll happily give it a home (in the 440...) David sure one of these in loft as well. . . . i don't think quite same design :? no takers last time i offe...

Re: Passenger side door pocket, rear speaker housings, load cover and ‘Venetian blind’

Thanks for the heads-up Aidan; I shall watch ebay with interest. Can I just flag up that the car known as R1 - the first of the (now) 3 that the club has rescued and is seeking to do up and rehome - is unexpectedly missing its voltmeter/oil pressure gauges (in it when first seen, removed by the time...

Is that automatic a lavender metallic?
It certainly looks like it and I think (in the absence of my trusty brochure collection) that it must be for 1989...although being it is a UK car I think you mean 311 "Oyster Grey Metallic" ;)

Re: Volvo 480 Bus company

I really rather like the stripes on the side of the green GT. Why didn't I think of having Snazzy's replacement subframe powder coated in electric blue instead of picking boring grey ? O, maybe something to do with the fact I never look under cars  PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let them all find a good...

Re: Passenger side door pocket, rear speaker housings, load cover and ‘Venetian blind’

Thanks for identifying some of those James! Interesting what you say about the arm-rest - I find it no problem at all, but then you are considerably taller than I am, so maybe since I imagine you have the seat further back that's why it gets in your way? In the 440 I have the fold down armrest and t...

Re: Passenger side door pocket, rear speaker housings, load cover and ‘Venetian blind’

Was just thinking the other night how I would like a Venetian blind in my car, along with a boot cover that works Don't go there - I know it's very appealing in terms of collecting up as many accessories and options as possible (that's what I do!) but in this instance my advice is to read what aida...
