480’s at auction - Sunday 10th Feb

For those of you that follow 480 prices I thought you might be interested in the results of two that were being auctioned by Charterhouse at the Bath & West last Sunday. A burgundy Celebration with MOT had an estimate of 3500-3800 but highest bid was 2600 and went unsold A red 1992 S with no MOT had...

Dutch 480 in Somerset

Driving back from London to Somerset along the A303 on Thursday night (foot down in order to make sure we make it in time for last orders at the village pub) and what do I pass but a black 480 with Dutch plates somewhere around Sparkford/Yeovil. You won't have noticed me in a 1995 BMW 525 Touring (s...

Re: Spotted for sale

And here it is advertised on carandclassic.co.uk back in 2014.... http://m.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C532094 (Interesting bit of 'spin' there in the last sentence - "no ABS + no airbags = no worries" - whoever wrote that should be a politician!) Given it was on 133k and the latest ad doesn't mention m...

Limited Edition with GT wheels in Wigan

Having just parted with my 480 on Saturday - and having seen less than half a dozen on the roads in the 4 years I've owned one - I was thinking it would probably be a long time before I saw one again but then just two days later I'm at Wigan North Western train station and, what do you know, there b...

Re: Spotted for sale

How bizarre, have literally just logged on to report a 'spotted' sighting from earlier today but curiosity led me to check out this post first.......and what do you know, it's an advert for the very same car! Spotted today at Wigan North Western railway station. Wasn't close enough to really advise ...

For Sale - 480 Celebration Manual

The time has come to sell my 480 Celebration. I'm going to be listing it on carandclassic.co.uk but thought I should put it on here first. Text of the ad is as follows: 1995 Volvo 480 Celebration 2.0 I’ve had this car for coming up 5 years and during that time have covered almost 70,000 miles. I’m t...

Re: So, today was the day...

Well done Jifflemon! I've just been catching up on forum posts and having read the one about Skandix was asking myself why is Jifflemon buying 480 parts on eBay when I'm sure he's said he doesn't own one yet? Keep reading on down as they say! Anyway, really good news that someone is joining the 480 ...

Re: Starter Motor Replacement - how complex?

Right, I've managed to get the car started but its a "jury-rig" rather than a long term solution. Firstly I tested the starter and proved it was fine so my problem obviously lay somewhere between the ignition and the solenoid. Given that the ignition seemed fine I thought I'd rig up a 'jump' wire be...

Re: Starter Motor Replacement - how complex?

Thanks Jim, I can't find a specific post called "stone age technology" but I can see the phrase turns up in a lot of other threads so I'll have a good read through when I'm not supposed to be working! Proper "stone age technology" though is the crank handle I use on my Land Rover which has got me ou...

Re: Starter Motor Replacement - how complex?

Thanks guys. Stupidly I didn't test the starter motor before fitting it. I was all set to take it out again when I thought about checking the volts at the solenoid with the ignition at the point it should go live. The fact that I seemed to get 0 volts made me stop and think it might be something els...

Re: Starter Motor Replacement - how complex?

I did think it might be the ignition and had a play with the wiring on the ignition barrel. I put a wire between red (center) and the other wires in turn - white and grey seemed to do the normal Stage I and II of the ignition but when I put it to white-blue nothing except an audible click coming fro...

Re: Starter Motor Replacement - how complex?

After a jump start I managed to repatriate my Celeb back to Somerset and this morning I set about replacing the starter motor. I got it up on ramps in order to have access from above and below but I reckon you could probably do it all from above and without having to remove anything apart from the s...

Re: Starter Motor Replacement - how complex?

Thanks guys. Sounds like I'm going to have to get it home. First up a few trips back and forth with a can to the petrol station first (sods law dictates its almost empty) and then a bump start. If only it was like my old Land Rover and had a crank handle - that's come to my rescue on a number of occ...

Starter Motor Replacement - how complex?

Sods law has struck with a vengeance and my starter motor has failed on one of the few occasions I’ve driven up to London rather than getting the train. Nearest garage has quoted me £334 to replace and I’m struggling to justify the spend. So the £300 question (assuming second hand starter motor) is,...

if you have frayed wires then if yours isn't stopping in strange places yet, I am afraid it soon will be... David David, when you say stopping in strange places do you by any chance mean the whole car? Reason I ask is that having driven 130 miles last Sunday evening, totally trouble free but throug...

As an aside, the company selling the Paris Blue ES also has a super cool yellow Mitsubishi Colt Starion Turbo http://stonecoldclassics.com/coming-soon-mitsubishi-starion-turbo/ . What's the score regarding the digital clock? Is it rare?
Re the digital clock thing, they're not all that rare but there seemed to be a time when people were asking silly money for them on eBay. Think the market has cooled somewhat lately - maybe its a post Brexit slump!
