Re: Engine Control Systems - Potentiometer
I would assume, since Volvo specifies 1%, that 1% is admissible at the MOT. If you know anyone with a CO meter, you could take a few resistors (say one of each 390, 680, 1500,3300 Ohms) with you to the test, connect each of the resistors in turn and establish CO percentage. Then you know which value...

Re: Drive belt !
I just replaced both belts (and the timing belt) on my B18FTM engine with airco (not yet working) - the long 6-track belt is 1555mm long (Volvo part 3473198) and the small 3 track belt (Volvo part 3450074, driving the alternator from the airco compressor) is 600mm. I got mine from eBay, look for 6PK...

Re: Testing Electronic Speedo
The 220 KHz signal (about 0.5V top-top) is only present when the sensor is connected to the (active) speedo electronics. It will be difficult to access the signal in the car, but maybe the connector under the air cleaner box is accessible. The flywheel sensor has a resistance of 220 Ohms (+/- 60) an...

Re: Engine Control Systems - Potentiometer
Indeed, a potentiometer is an adjustable resistor, nothing more. A resistor is not specified for voltage but for wattage (the amount of heat it can handle without being reduced to smoke). In this case any 390 Ohms resistor will do, because the value is an input to the ECU and the ECU-input has some ...

The voltmeter will work properly but the oil pressure gauge requires a sensor to be installed and connected.

Re: new alternator fitted
You alternator is clearly not charging the battery... Does your charge-light in the instrument panel come on before starting and extinguish as it should with the engine running? Is the (thick red) wire between alternator and battery properly connected (resistance lower than 0,1 Ohms)? Is the earth-c...

Re: speedo fault... just the 'mileomiter'
If the speedo indicates (more or less) correct speed and the info centre shows mpg and avg speed, the most likely problem is the small plastic gear that transfers the stepper motor's motion to the milage counters. Remove the instrument cluster from the car, open it and take the speedo unit out. You ...

Re: Change Speedometer for S40?
Forget the S40 stuff, use 480 stuff! If it is just about the info center, get one, rather than the complete instruments cluster. The speedos typically fail first, so there must be plenty of info centers lying around. If you currently have analogue gauges for temp and tank, you will need to acquire a...

Re: Testing Electronic Speedo
Speedos come in two versions: early 4 pins throught the printed circuit board and later 5 pin small blue connector. I test my speedos using a spare speed sensor (I'm not sure the flywheel sensor is identical) connected to on yellow/blue connectors yellow6 and blue2 on yellow/red yellow6 and red3 on ...

Re: Mileometer change - winding it on ?
If you take the speedometer / milage counter unit apart, you'll see something like this (unit removed from a 1986 480ES) http://www.maathuis.info/images/kmteller.jpg The stepper motor (brown) on the printed circuit board to the left drives the counters. I once used a small drill (dremel tool) with a...

Re: Engine Control Systems - Potentiometer
The CO-potentiometer has a resistance range from 300-10000 Ohms and tells the ECU to produce 0,5 - 2% CO. Volvo specifies 1% CO for optimal performance of the B18E engine. In my B18E engine the potentiometer is set at about 400 Ohms to produce 1% of CO and if I would need the potentiometer and could...

Re: Are CEM1 & CEM2 interchangeable?
The short answer is NO - they're not interchangeable as they have some differences in the connections. I don't think the functions differ though and with a few changes in the wiring you might be able to use CEM2 where CEM1 was and vice versa. CEM3 has major differences in the connectors (and functio...

Re: 86/87 ES Electrical Schemes
Hi Thanks for the link. The ones in there are for 1991 or 1992 - 1994 cars. I believe that 86/87 are different, because the plugs of the instrument panel are not equal, and the instrument panel are not interchangeable. Checkout the bottom document called "Wiring Diagrams" - it has the schemes calle...

Re: Headlights problem
I also have a problem with my blue 480: both headlights pop up as expected but the left headlight never goes down again. I had to understand the workings to solve the problem. In my car it turned out the "go down"-signal is only connected to the right hand motor and not to the left hand motor. As th...

Re: Infocenter/speedometer/tachometer all is black
The May 1991 wiring diagrams (Section 3 (39) of the Workshop Manual) suggests there is NO relay 4.35 anymore. All dashboard lights are always on via the rheostat, whenever ignition is switched on (via the light switch and fuse 10). Given your observation that the instrument lighting works shortly be...
