Re: Not starting at all :(

I think that the idle control valve IS required during starting as it will be a tiny bit open to give the correct mixture (assumed from ambient air & engine temperature) ?

Re: New Lambda question...help please :)

poor idling could well be the ICV, OR if it got wet there isa small switch fixed to throtlle butterfly that determines if the engine 'should be idling' it gives different resistance depending on throttle closed (ie idle) or open look at resistance on following pins on switch:- try these with engine ...

Re: Not starting at all :(

three things reqd for it to run:- 1 Fuel check fuel peeing out at the connection/joint above drivers side wheel arch when you split that connector and spin starter (cannot here so cant take a photo) don't smoke and catch the fuel in a tin!:-) 2 Spark take the lead from the coil DIRECT to a spark plu...

Re: Testing Electronic Speedo

I 'think' that the only common part there is between the pair of them is the power supply?

there is a signal from the speedo output that goes to the 'engine management' but maybe just to allow fuel consumption to be worked out?

Re: Drivers side outer door handle defunct

It is not difficult to remove the door trim and have a butchers, I've had the plastic clips 'pop-off' on other cars, and with it the door would not open at all to gain access to remove the trim!!! :cryhard:

Re: Testing Electronic Speedo

OK bit the bullet and bought a 'boy racer' style speedo and added a sensor pick-up onto front N/S drive shaft when in the back of dash fitting the new speedo I spliced in a two way plug from the original sensor. now VOLVO speedo works on the passenger footwell, power supply is from the light for the...

Re: Fuel pump problems?

both my 1800 (E) & 2litre (L) I have always heard the fuel pump run up for a few seconds when key at position 2, then wait until pump goes 'quiet' before try the starter, fires up straight off as then the injectors all pressurised BEFORE engine starts cranking

Re: brakes loosing pressure.

depending on the type of ABS you 'might' be lucky and only need to change the controller unit.

this means that you do NOT have to touch the hydraulics in any way!!

what year is it (a turbo I guess) but cant see the ABS unit in photo :-(

Re: high-pitched squealing from Volvo 480

worse case could be the idler pulley or the tensioner on the cambelt :-( but that would be unaffected by full/part lock. :? quick check is to remove the alternator belt and if noise goes away then belt/alternator. if still there then suspect idle/tensioner, they CAN be changed with engine in car, tr...

Jim

ta for the info might be quite easy

We need to wait and see what the truck company say before I wade in, I am tempted to let them ask me to get a quote from repair shops then say I'll accept HALF as a cash donation! :D

repairing rear panel

Some idiot decided to re-work the drivers panel between the arch and the door with a trailer :-( quite a savage ding and lovely crease :badmood: is it easy enough access to remove the panel with the speaker and just 'gently' press it back out, fortunately the paint is only scuffed, not broken but I'...

Re: The 480.

Ive run a 1700 and a two litre the two litre is more economical as higher geared (and that was running 65 section tyres until i bought winters and could only get 60s ) but with enough torque to easily handle fifth gear at 30 with no hesitation pootling around we've had 45+ on long runs around NE are...

Re: Testing Electronic Speedo

Still not getting this to work 100%, recently fell over again

final solution might be to run new wires DIRECT into the blue multi plug ie cut into the loom at the grey plug for the sensor and supply an independant 12V and earth

Re: Making safe pre tensioners

ah I see, some serios attacks with the buckle then ! I reckon mine were 'accidently' triggered when a previous owner fitted a multichnager CD in boot and was mucking about with wires under seat OR the car had a wee bump but I've not seen any sign of it (had car twelve years) presently still wrestlin...

Re: Making safe pre tensioners

if these are the pretensioners with the LARGE spring running along tunnel then they are MECHANICALLY triggered so you can leave them as they are BUT you say one 'triggered' in which case that belt buckle will be VERY low and pulled down into the plastic case, not sure Mr MoT would feel about one bei...

Re: Brake disc backing plates

I made 'new' ones from a piece of galv iron and fixed them to the back plate with the clamps that came with mud-flaps! I think they are fitted along with the bolts that bolt hub to 'axle' still to do the front ones as they are almost gone too (well about a third are still there) I plan to fix them o...

Tips on rebuilding REAR brake calipers

Any hints and tips on over-hauling REAR brake calipers? It seems 'easy' from Haynes but . . . . . . . . . . . . also just where do i source a seal kit as opposed to a WHOLE caliper, local factors don't do kits :-( my MoT was just in and I'd like to get it better for next year. (also plan to buy a wh...
