there's a clip on top of the VEM, wich hold the temperature-cable.
release the cable and you can disconnect this cable.

it's a Hydrolic system, filled up with some kind of oil.
a small leakage and the system is gone.

Most german car have this system, because of regulations.
Unfortunately most systems seem to be broken as mine.

It looks to me that your instrumentpanel is from an AMERICAN!!

Put a resisor of 120 OHM between the mass and the yellow cable, the oil-gauge will be in the middle of the scale. if you put it to the mass without a resistor it will say 0 lbs.
