F.A.Q. - Installing footwell-lights

If you want to give your car a more luxurious look than it already has, installing footwell lights is a quite cheap, simple and good-looking way to do so. The location for the lamps has already been cut out of the underside of the dashboard and closed again with a small black plastic cover that can easily be removed.

You will need the following parts twice (L+R) :

  • 14
Cover for the back-side of the lamps, Volvo partnumber 3200805
  • 13
The lightbulb itself, Volvo partnumber 966850 (3 Watt) or 965831 (5 Watt)
  • 12
The small frame with metal socket to put the lightbulb in, Volvo partnumber 3460479 (used to be: 3276850)
  • 3
Frame to replace the black cover on the bottom of the dashboard, Volvo partnumber 3413356 (original cover is partnumber 3418246)
Clamps for the connectors on the lightbulb-socket, some clamps to split current from a wire and some wiring

Do you really need to order all the above? No, not really. The black cover (14) is the same cover used to shield the top-side of lightbulb in the the glovebox. The lightbulb and its socket are also used in the glovebox and in the trunk. You can also extract these parts from the glovebox in a 340 / 360, and maybe even from a 440 / 460. So if you have a local breakers' you can find 75% of the parts you need.

If you want to start installing you need to use a power-source to connect it all to. You can choose to use a permanent 12V wire or one that only works when you put the key on ignition and then use a switch, but a nicer solution is to use the current that goes to the green ring that lights up around the ignition-key-hole. This one lights up in combination with the interior lighting, so the footwell lights turn on when you get in and will fade out once you sit. You can also turn on the footwell-lights while driving by switching on the interior lights.

Once you have selected a power-source you remove the black covers where the lights will be mounted, use the splitting-clamps to attach your wiring to the power-source, pull the wiring through the dashboard from the drivers' side to the passengers' side, put the frame together and click it in place.

Now, that wasn't too hard was it? And it looks amazing, like a luxury-limo!
