Aircon R12
Hi all
As previously stated the aircon clicks into place but no hot air is coming out. I have been cross-referencing threads and the internet and it appears that a straight replacement for the dreaded R12 is the RS24.
I am talking to a mobile engineer who would like to come and have a look next week. Unfortunately he does not stock RS24 but it is possible that Skip has been converted to R134a. However, but I would rate the possibility at less than 5% judging by my overall feel of the previous ownership.
Now, what is this rusty zigzaging piece metal in front of the rad?
The next 2 pics are from a line that seems to link the condenser or the evaporator (my apologies I know very little) and are a bit wet at both end, is this a regular occurence?

You'll be please to know that rusty pipe is nothing to do with aircon; It's actually a powersteering cooler pipe.
I'm having a similar debate with myself over R12 replacement Vs R134a swapover. I can actually lay my hands on volvo R134a components, and given that every seal needs renewal, it sort of makes sense to me to put an R134a compressor and reciever dryer in, rather than convert the ones I've got.
Battling against this of course, is hoping my aircon man can find some drop in gas and I don't have to swap a damn thing.

I was under the impression that converting to R134a required parts no longer available (dryer?) Anyway, I will hear more about my aircon system later this week so will update my findings accordingly.

I'd add to a list of "wirebrush, rust proof and paint" - just go lightly at first in case its really bad. But better to find out whilst in your garage than losing power steering fluid whilst on the road.

Bit of an update.
Turns out the aircon is working perfectly fine but only churns out 13 degrees out instead of the 6 ideally and just needs a top up.
Unfortunately as originally thought this is the old R12 coolant which cannot be found anymore but he will try to find some RS24 which is the direct replacement.
On an "ego-boosting" topic he was very impressed by the overall condition of the system and made it clear that this "old system" was pretty much indestructible
Bottom line is: The hunt for RS24 is on the way
Topic updated. RS24/R426A was then replaced by R437A and from what I read on the internet this is a retrofit to old (pre-1993) R 12 systems. R347A can still be found on ebay for about £55/900 grs.

I can only assume that it is best to replace the existing refrigerant. The car requires 900gr and the bottle I bought today on EBay is.........900gr. I did run it past the aircon dud and he will renew the refrigerant with the one I ordered today. I should be delivered around the 31st and will be the guinea pigjifflemon wrote:Good discoveries... Was this with the R12 replacement? Did they add fresh oil and more importantly, is it chilling?

R437A is a drop in replacement for the R12 so there is no need to change components or do anything oil-wise. Air is now coming out of the vents at 5-6C and it is very timely.jifflemon wrote:Was this with the R12 replacement? Did they add fresh oil and more importantly, is it chilling?
It is easily found on Ebay, I paid £53 for a 900gr bottle. I will carry on monitoring the situation to make sure that everything does what it is supposed to do.

I'm waiting for my aircon man to come round first to check the system can hold vacuum; No point ordering if I've got more leaks than sieve.

Aircon still working. Not that it is hot outside anyway but the mist vanishes in an instant
