The problem is the electric speedo pickup.
Most Renault stuff is cable driven.

The gearboxes can't be easily converted from cable speedo to electric.
High spec 440/460s have the same box with electric pickup, if it has an info centre, it'll probably be electric.

Hammers can't fix a 480!!!

Thanks for reply the problem I have when selecting reverse and moving backwards there is smoke coming from under the bonnet and a smell of burning which stops immediately I select a forward gear so I am guessing oil is getting onto the exhaust but why only in reverse? The car goes into gear and moves through the gears smoothly with no problem at all and drives well at all speeds so until I get it looked at on Wednesday I am stumped!!

Hi all just an update on gearbox, turns out it's the usual suspect the oil filled engine/gearbox mount, when selecting reverse the engine was moving forward opening up the mount and spilling fluid on the exhaust.have sourced one on the Internet for about £115 does that sound about right?

seems awffy pricey for a block of rubber and couple bits of steel / thread holes/rods :?

but if that's what ggogle brings up then that's it? 2nd hand one from breakers?

BTW HBOL has the same image for BOTH manual and auto box rear mounts, so maybe try that as search instead?

Yes only the one at rear of gearbox apparently, there is a large split in mine and fluid/oil is leaking onto exhaust and you would not believe how far the engine moves when reverse is selected!!!
