For some time there have been reports of users with PM issues. The 'new PM'-counter can display an incorrect value, and your inbox / outbox / sent items folders can miss lots of posts (but still prevent you with navigation buttons for pages of missing PMs).
I found reports of other PHPBB forums that suffered the same fate. The cause remains unclear.
The last few days I have been experimenting with a copy of the current forum database and an older backup (where many missing PM's are still present). Since I cannot pinpoint the moment where things went wrong we won't be able to restore all missing posts, BUT we should be able to restore many old PM's, make sure that your mailfolders no longer display as 'full' while you can only see some of the messages, and fix the new PM counter.
Luckily it only affects the PM-system and not the forum-posts and forum-topics. I still need to do some more experimenting, but be aware that repairs are underway

You mean that some software versions should be skipped at all times? Like a thirteenth floor in a skyscraper?

Re: PM issues - new PM count / disappeared PMs
I have just performed some maintenance that should restore many missing private messages. It could have restored messages that you manually deleted in the past, in that case: simply delete them again.
A large problem was that users would receive error messages stating that their inbox reached a maximum, but when browing the inbox next-to-no messages were visible (and thus could not be deleted).
I have tested it on my own server and (for me) it seems to have done the trick.
Second problem remains: the unread PM-counter at the top of the page is off...
I will look for a way to reset that too. Hope this maintenance-shift helps some of you

Re: PM issues - new PM count / disappeared PMs
I believe I have found a way that fixed the incorrect 'new PM' count as well. In case you were suffering from an incorrect 'new PM' count, simply go to your inbox and see that the discrepancy has vanished
Hope all board issues are behind us now and that everyone can use it the way it was designed to do. If you run into problems just let us know!
Best regards,
Daniel
