SRS light on, how can i fix it?

From CEM to VEM, from LED to lightbulb and more. If you have an electrical problem, like a broken info-centre, search for answers in this category. This is also the place to be when you expect the problem to be of an electrical nature...

SRS light on, how can i fix it?

Post by DanDCowan » Fri Feb 08, 2013 10:56 am

My srs light is on, i did have the whole of the inside out but never unplugged the airbag box, however the wire came out of the connecting block on the driver seat, i thought it was the heated seat connector but theres 2 is the other connector for an airbag? if so would disconnecting it and reconnecting it make it light the light? there was a lot of water in the driver foot well if they had shorted would this make the light come on? could i have blown something somewhere down the line? this job is made harder due to the fact i havent got a multimeter, im just trying to work out if theres a reset switch for the airbag box or something like that...

Hi

My SRS light came on when i swapped my airbag/steering wheel, I reset it by following Jims great guide in the post below to erase the fault codes using the under bonnet diagnostic tool.

http://www.volvo-480-europe.org/forum/v ... de#p168246

It was a bit fiddly but the light did go off in the end.

good luck

hahaha, yeh, might not be a bad idea to get a garage!
So where can I get one of these diagnostic tools from? Also is there an ODB-II port on the 480?

You don't need to get it from anywhere, you just look at the small black plastic box on the passenger side (RHD car) suspension mounting under the bonnet

Dan, see link below also...

http://www.volvo-480-europe.org/volvo480/downloads.php

If you look at the 'fog lights installation' manual, it has a diagram showing where the wiring for the SRS system runs. On the 3rd page there is the English text to go with the diagram, including a note "all SRS leads are orange or yellow".

Chassis number 586300 seems to have some significance to do with the rear seats also but it isn't clear. At a guess it gets more complicated after this point.

Looks like there are some bits and pieces at floor level that may be wet? Could be crash sensor unit, seat belt pre-tensioners or something. Worth a look but also with any warning light I stand by my first comment - disconnect the battery first just in case it is easily cleared.

I'm no expert just reading this stuff - supplied by coyote1980. Also see post above from Blanki/GlasgowJim....looks like the diagnostic unit DOES cover SRS

To get through the mot just remove the warning light from the instrument panel. ;)

the crash sensor unit is an 8x6x6 cm metal "box" located under the cubby between the front seats. It is connected by a multi wire plug. quick access is to remoce the cubby liner its an easy and quick job. . The usual culprit is not water but the srs connection to the airbag. The pretensioners are fairly dumb so it unlikely to be that. The car would have to be immersed in 2 foot or 60cm of water before ie totally flooded before the system would fail due to water.

Will try to check out for you later today but very very busy and have a baclog of pm stuff to do as well. :x

Jim
not sure if removal of bulb WILL get an MoT pass, don't they insist that the warning bulb comes on for a few seconds when ignition is first turned on to 'prove' the warning light is operational?

that is the case with the ABS light, ie no warning light = fail :(

That is how I read the new rules, must light up and then go out.

You could get it MOTed before 1st April as it’s only an advisory till then.

Or find an MOT station that has not heard of the new rules. Took my car in for a free winter check last week at an MOT station and asked about the new rules, they had not even heard of them.

ok it did go through with the light on, im going to try jamesys idea, just need some free time where im not using the car, as for the info centre, it is temperamental, as ive heard all of them are, it was off for a long time, until i was low on fuel, then it came on and shouted "FUEL" at me, so i filled up and started the car again and it was still on so i played with it, saw all the avg's and mpg and stuff, left it alone for a bit because i didnt want to crash, i then tryed to change it but it had gone to fuel avg. and wouldnt move from there... the next day it didnt come on and hasnt since, im not sure how much fuel is in there, but im going to try and see if it come back on again, could this be something to do with the fuel sensor? i did have to take the pipe off from under the back seat and may have jogged it, but surely this wouldnt case the whole of the info centre to not work? the back light is on but no lcd display, all the connection look ok, but its tight back there, the wires arent as long as i would like

GMy info centre does much the same, I've been meaning to have a look at the wiring behind, also the connection to the switch.

Many say a loose/dirty connection solves many problems, I seriously doubt knocking the cables at the sender would wipe out your entire info centre, although nothing really surprises me with 480s!! Lol

Although mine has just started spouting random digital nonesense at me, much akin to the scene in Predator where he blows himself up!!

Me thinks mine is actually kiffed! :

Mine did that for a while (spouting nonsense) then gave up all together. Yeah maybe loose connection at the back. SRS light functions OK I think...

I tried getting the fault codes out but I reckon that my SRS is 'goosed' as there is NO CODE as in the LAST line of Jim's link
ditto the ABS system does not want to play (even the guy at a garge the last time failed with his Bosch Lap-top :-( ) but as it is now fixed only the SRS to worry about

( viewtopic.php?f=8&t=19326&p=168246&hilit=error+code#p168246 )

I also have a connection to pin 5, not listed in the link above, I dont have Remote locking or Cruise Control so that these 'sockets' is empty as expected code is 452!

I did get a code from teh 'fuel system' which tells me the speedo is not working (which I already know, but useful to see that the thing is working) :-)

just to bring this thread back to life for a bit... is there a way of connecting the ecu to my laptop? ive been wanting to put a netbook in the 480 and run it from a touch screen up the front, the software ive got for it supports only OBDII, so i may have to get some other software, but is there some kind of converter to usb or serial?

To fix the SRS light problem is quite easy:
There's a white (2-pin) connector on the back of your instrument panel. This should be connected (should be a 2-wire cable (Bleu-red ??) somewhere behind your instrument panel)
If that one is allready connected, then there's a malfunction in the system

@DanDCowan: I'm not sure if that's possible. The 480 has no OBD-plug...so it will be very hard to get the info out digitally.
