Noise of the electric antenna

Noise of the electric antenna

Post by coyote1980 » Sat Sep 20, 2003 8:58 pm

Question: how much noise does the original Volvo antenna for the 480 produce?

The reason for asking is that on my old 1987 ES I used to have a universal electric antenna which made a terrible noise every time it extracted or rectracted. I believe the original antenna were quite silent, so if you have one please tell me.

I am also interested in finding out prices that are fair for a new or second hand one in top condition.

antenna

Post by volvofox » Sat Sep 20, 2003 11:59 pm

 I guess the electric antenna I have makes a noise, which i find not disturbing , almost wheening.

If the sound doesn't sound cracking or distructing, I mean not different than before, I wouldn't worry

If nescessarry any dutch scrapper (and there are a lot of 480 on the scrap here) will give you another antenna for "change money"

Thanx

Thanx Volvofox!

Can anyone quote me the price of a complete electric antenna, new from Volvo? If it's below 50 euro I'll probably get it new, otherwise it's scrappy time. :)

Noise of the electric antenna

I was going to buy one a few months back but I was quoted £95 + VAT from Volvo - dont know what that is in euros - but I opted to just get a new mast for £25 + VAT. :)

Hi Daniel,

I have an electrical one on my 480 too. It's not that noisy, but silent is another word... lets say: you can hear it.
You can try the guys from http://www.onderdeel-nodig.nl/ for another electrical one.
Good luck.

Greetings, Bart.

Bart, where in Groningen are you? I believe I noticed a black 480 just around the corner here in The Oosterpoort, is that yours? Not too far away from the evil Konmar supermarket?

Yep, I think it's mine...
But in the Warmoesstraat there is another black one. Mine is a 93 model and the other is a 87 model.
I've seen yours too! Looks great!

Greetings, Bart.

Bart, is yours the one with the not-original alloys?

Daniel,

My 480 did have TSW alloys... but since a month I have the original Taurus alloys.
But I think you have the right one. You can recognize my 480 from the same sidemarkers as you have (white ones).

Maybe we could meet one day, then I can listen to how much noise the antenna makes :)

You live in the Warmoesstraat?

Don't worry - you're not alone. Mine broke at the weekend. Volvo have got the part in for me (£25 for a new bit of metal, with some plastic running inside it!), but I haven't collected it yet. Had great fun dismantling the aerial the other day though, to see what was wrong with it!

Mine just makes a whirling sound when its going up or down.
One thing however that irretates the shit out of me is that when i switch off the radio or switch off the car, i hear a loud bang coming from my right rear speaker.
My dealer tells me it has to do with my radio, they and me also checked as far as possible.
Anyone else had the same thing?

The wirey bit

Post by chris1roll » Mon Sep 29, 2003 7:18 pm

i'm assuming its the wire that pushes and pulls it up and down, its stuck in the up position, so at least i can listen to the radio, when I turn the car on it makes a godawful noise, and when I turn it off you can hear the wire clicking as it coils up and then releases, then coils up, etc.
Everything was workeing fine till then.
Still at £95 + VAT I think it will have to wait.. got my MOT tomorrow morning :badmood: ooooohhh.

That sounds exactly the same as mine. The little plastic ratchet bit snapped at the end, just enough to push it out of the motor, so it would go up fine, and need assistance to be put back down again - otherwise make a horrible grinding noise!
