Green or red dipstick in engine on later models
Hi,
I heard something about there being a difference between engines with a red or green dipstick in them. I believe the later 480 left the factory with a red dipstick, but they found out that 'something' was wrong at the dealers later, fixed it, and fitted a green dipstick to make sure other dealers could see this 'construction error' was solved.
I have a green dipstick in my 2-liter and a red one in my Turbo Collection and hope someone here can give me some info on this
Thanx!

Yeah, the older 2-liters have a bad reputation when it comes to oil-leaks! So it wasn't something related to callbacks, but just the introduction of a new type 2-liter engine.rpruen wrote:From what I can tell it was a different engine type, mostly to reduce oil usage. The engine doesn't have cooling oil sprays to the underside of the pistons.

Some 2 litre cars are the subject of a call-back action: they drill a 1mm hole under the 2nd (?) piston ring, to cure excess oil consumption. This is missing on certain models, somehow it did not happen at the factory.
I hope the info is correct, I recalled it from a discussion 3,5 years ago when I bought my 480.

That´s about what I´ve read on a Finnish volvo page..no talk of 480´s though, just late 2l 440/460. Must be because 480´s wasn´t imported to Finland after 1989/90, if I remember right. Some 2 litre cars are the subject of a call-back action: they drill a 1mm hole under the 2nd (?) piston ring, to cure excess oil consumption. btw.I looked under the bonnet of my 2.0l -> green dipstick.
Nice info Swe480T!
