Mine runs at 184F (85C). In traffic on a hot day, it goes to 194F (90C) & then the fan kicks in. Ben is right, coolant with anti-freeze won't boil at 100C. Also, being under pressure raises the boiling point. The 2 effects combined probably raises the boiling point to at least 115C. The tmperature s...

Just had mine done by a bodywork magician in a village near here. He made new wheel arches by hand, welded them in & did a magnificent respray job. He also sorted a bit of rust at the bottom of the driver's door, all for £500, which I thought very reasonable. (BTW, he also builds & flies light airc...

Hi, Volvofox & Ben, Thanks for the tip about unsoldering; I'll try that on the old unit. The new one works perfectly but I'd like to repair the old one so I have a spare. Ben; I talked to my Volvo agent today & he confirms that the soldering on the 5 pins was an official Volvo mod. (not the 4 at the...

Hi, Ben. Seems unlikely that Volvo would have done it if it wasn't part of the original design. It may seem crazy, but I didn't notice whether the replacement one had any soldering. I'll be taking it out again soon; I've just ordered a new dash surround to replace my old damaged one, so I'll have a ...

Thanks guys for all of your advice. Today I found an instrument panel with the right colour connectors(grey & green) at the breakers. It was labelled '440 Turbo' but since the colours were right I decided to chance it. Seems to work OK. One reason I went for it was that some previous owner had solde...

Kick plates
Hi, Dragon, I got a pair of GTGrafix plates last week. I agree they would be better a bit wider. I fixed them with clear silicone as they suggest. I protected the top surface with masking tape in case of accident, then made sure they were truly flat & making good contact with the sill, then a thin b...

Speedo
My speedo has started working erratically; Quite a common problem I think. Probably a poor connection at one of the plugs at the back of the dash?? Also, one of the dash illumination bulbs has gone intermittent, but I'm not sure whether the two things happen at the same time. I know I'll have to tak...

I just did the groove between the rubber & the roof panel. Did it both sides of the car & all the way from front to back. The worst part was cleaning it out-had a lot of gunge in there. I used a thin stick wrapped with cloth, then about a 2mm. bead of silicone into the base of the groove. Good luck,...

What Oil?
A couple of months ago I changed to Castrol GTX. Does this mean I should not use any other oil now?
Thanks, Chris
Thanks, Chris

In fact.... Chris' 480 Turbo Auto, is the very same 480 Turbo that my dad owned/registered when it was new, back in 1990! :-) Nice to know she's still going well Chris. :D Yes,Ben; please tell me how you knew. I'm the 7th. owner. It's still got the Cecil & Larter badge on the tailgate. 95000 miles ...

Martin, had my 480 about 3 years. Insurance costs me £180. My wife & I had a matching pair 'til 6 months ago, when she totalled hers :( When I say matching, they were identical-1990, turbo, auto, same colour (light blue metallic-don't know the name but Volvo colour 218). She hit the wrong pedal in ...

Power steering whining
For God's sake, do check the condition of the drive belt. The whining on mine was there & I ignored it. The belt broke & snarled up with the cambelt (only 10,000 miles old). I ended up with seven bent valves & a large bill, which would have been larger if the service manager at my local main Volvo a...
